Is this the ‘Greenest’ renewable heat idea yet?

“The possibility of using existing wells enables us to not only deliver renewable geothermal heat at a much lower cost but also to recycle wells that would otherwise be wasted,”

A comment by the head of Geothermal Engineering Ltd, Ryan Law, regarding the project they are undertaking with Cuadrilla to expolre the liklihood that geothermal heat can be delivered from deep wells that were originally drilled for other purposes such as oil and gas extraction.

The idea that we can use already constructed wells and boreholes to extract heat is something that H.D. Services Ltd have been promoting since 2009 in regards to existing water supply boreholes. While there would be restrictions on ground water abstraction rates for some installations, many owners of existing water wells could potentially retrofit a renewable heating technology for their homes.

Unlike the mamoth task of extracting heat from huge gethermal holes, which could provide district heating for a significant number of homes, abstracting water from an existing water suply borehole for heating purposes is a relatively simple process.
