How can water heat a million homes?
In June, the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) will launch their water source heat map, which identifies the potential source of more than six giggawatts of renewable heat which they calculate could heat upto a million homes. The map shows the potential heat that could be utilised from rivers, canals and the sea using heat pumps, which simply amplify warmth from pipes buried at the bottom of the water source.
If the energy from the process comes from renewables, properties can be warmed with near-zero carbon emissions.
The water source heat pumps discussed in the extraction of this heat are predominantly industrial sized, however domestic options are available. H.D. Services Ltd specialise in the installation of dedicated open-loop ground source heat pumps which utilise available groundwater as a heat source passing it through the heat pump where heat is extracted before returning the cooled water to the aquifer via a soakaway, allowing the water to regain heat prior to rejoining the aquifer.
