Cornwall – the home of hot rock engineering innovation
In the last few weeks, an abandoned deep geothermal borehole located in Cornwall has been used to demonstrate how naturally present underground heat could be used to produce clean, safe renewable energy.
Engineers from Geothermal Engineering Limited demonstrated that water can be heated to 60°C using nothing but naturally occurring underground heat.
The project is supported by Lord Teverson, who stated that “Geothermal heat and energy has had too low a profile in all the debates about renewables. What we have is the start of a new energy revolution here in Cornwall.”
Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Davey, is a supporter of geothermal in the UK. He states that he is “pleased to see that a deep geothermal project is finally producing energy.” Adding “ this….sector could make a real contribution to renewable heat supply in the UK”.
Cornwall is leading the way in this area, with two sites having been granted planning permission for geothermal plants with potential sites across the UK.
It is encouraging to see that geothermal technologies are coming to the fore after all this time, and HD Services, although not installers of true geothermal, are pleased to be playing a small part in this revolution.
