Warning: If UK does not decarbonise residential heating, net zero targets will not be met.
The Business Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee report: Decarbonising Heat in Homes, has been published and issues a stark warning that more urgent changes are required as the Government is not yet on track to deliver on its own targets.
The Climate Change Committee estimates that there are 29 million existing homes in the UK which require upgrading to low carbon heating by 2050, making decarbonising the UK a big task.
The housing stock of the UK is among the oldest and worst insulated in Europe with only 15% of its housing stock having been built since 1990.
The CCC suggests that investment of about £250 billion is needed to ensure full decarbonisation of homes by 2050 – around £9 billion per year from the late 2020’s to 2050, at an average cost of £10,000 per home.
