5 ways you can help the environment while stuck at home

While we are all having to spend so much time at home due to the current situation, Climate Change is still happening. Although the air in our locked-down cities and towns becomes a little less toxic for the moment, there are other, small things that we can actively do while in confinement to help support our world and its inhabitants.

Here are 5 of our favourites at HDS, some of which we have implemented in our own homes and gardens!

1. Plant some bee-friendly seeds

Help pollinators like bees and butterflies by planting some seeds or established flowers in your garden that they will love.  Or you can put them in pots if you don’t have a garden.

2. Create a home for solitary bees

Bees are vital for our ecosystems and it’s not just the types that live together in huge hives that are needed.

Solitary bees play a vital role too, and they need somewhere to live. You can easily make your own with a few planks of wood and some plant stems, pieces of bamboo or straws.

3. Sew any holes in your clothes

Use any spare time to sew up that annoying hole in a jumper, so you don’t need to throw it away and buy another. It’s tempting to spend your time in isolation ordering things online, but the more you reuse clothes, the less impact you’ll have on the environment.

It takes a lot of water to make cotton clothes and there is also a carbon footprint around deliveries.

4. Wash clothes at a lower temperature

We’ve all heard the wash at 30 mantra, but did you know a lower-temperature wash is less likely to shake out plastic fibres? Also think about whether something really needs to be washed.

5. Have shorter showers

The average shower in the UK lasts eight minutes and uses around 60 litres of water, according to The Green Age.

Try spending a little time less in the shower and maybe even order a water-saving shower head.
