DECC announce Domectic RHI – for launch in Spring 2014

On Friday 12th July, the DECC announced the details of the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive, due to launch in Spring 2014.

The scheme is the first of its kind anywhere in the world for domestic properties. It means that homeowners will now be able to invest confidently in cleaner, greener renewable heat technologies, while reducing their carbon footprint and saving money. The DRHI’s link with the Green Deal means that home owners could get help with the upfront cost of installation too.

THE BASICS:

  • The Domestic RHI will provide financial support for eligible renewable heating systems that heat a single domestic property in Great Britain.
  • The Domestic RHI will be payable over 7 years.
  • Property can be on or off the gas grid.
  • Payments made to the owner of the system.
  • The tariff set for Ground and Water Source Heat pumps is 18.8p/kWh
  • Self-Build projects will be eligible provided they meet the other eligibility criteria.
  • Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) are required for application. (In most cases a Green Deal Assessment will need to be completed for the EPC to be produced. Self-build properties should be able to submit their existing EPC upon application.)
  • Systems with back-up heating or systems in a ‘second home’ will require monitors to be installed.
  • Metering and monitoring service packages are available to help improve performance. These will pay an additional £230 per year (for heat pump installtions) to householders.
  • Legacy applications (applications made for systems installed prior to the launch of the RHI) will be phased in.
  • Applicants will have to prove annual maintenance of the installation in line with  the manufacturers instructions.

Climate change minister, Greg Barker, said: “Investing for the long term in new renewable heat technologies will mean cleaner energy and cheaper bills. So this package of measures is a big step forward in our drive to get innovative renewable heating kit in our homes.

“Householders can now invest in a range of exciting heating technologies knowing how much the tariff will be for different renewable heat technologies and benefit from the clean green heat produced. We are also sending a clear signal to industry that the coalition is 110% committed to boosting and sustaining growth in this sector.”

HD Services have been following the development of the domestic RHI since the launch of the commercial RHI in November 2011. Our services have been tailored to reflect the eligibility criteria and requirements for application.
